How the Florence ZTL works

The historic centre of Florence (Firenze) is a ZTL, a Zona a Traffico Limitato or limited traffic zone. While it is active, only vehicles with a permit may drive in.

How you get fined

Every entrance has a camera gate (varco) that reads number plates. Driving past an active gate without a permit means a fine, and each gate you pass is a separate fine. With a rental car the fine usually arrives months later, with an administration fee from the rental company on top.

How to avoid a fine

  • Check the map for the time you will actually arrive, not just now.
  • Tell us what you drive: some older diesel and petrol cars are banned at any hour.
  • Park outside the zone and walk. "Plan a route" suggests car parks outside every ZTL.
  • Staying at a hotel inside the zone? It must register your plate before you drive in.
  • Bus-only gates stay forbidden even with a permit.

My hotel is inside the zone

  1. Your hotel must register your number plate with the city before you drive in. Driving in first and asking later usually means a fine per camera.
  2. Deadline: not verified yet. Ask your hotel what their deadline is, and get confirmation that your plate has been registered before you arrive.
  3. Drive in only by the route your hotel gives you. Bus-only gates stay forbidden even with a valid permit.
  4. Official permit information
  5. Day permits ("contrassegno giornaliero") are sold by Servizi alla Strada: transit only, or transit plus parking. Prices unverified: €5 and €15.
